Pottery Classes for Kids

The Need to Create

We all enjoy making something with our hands. Finding the right medium for one’s own special talents is very satisfying—whether it is yarn and knitting needles, wood and carving tools, oil paint and brushes or a lump of clay.

After School Classes can be arranged at your childrens school.  Contact your local Park & Recreation department or talk to your school about setting up a one-time class. I will bring all supplies to the school at 3:00, the children will make a pottery project from natural clays, usually in the cafeteria. Children are picked up at 4:00 by parents. Projects will be brought back to the school the following week after firing and glazing, wrapped tightly in a colorful blue plastic bag for the children to bring home at the end of the day. Here are some of the over 50 projects my students have done!....

History tour of my pottery barn. Learn about clays, where they come from, how they are used, different compositions and applications.  Learn about early CT potters, including Hervey Brooks from Goshen whose pottery workshop is now at Sturbridge village in Massachusetts.

Follow the process from a lump of clay...through turning on the wheel, trimming, decorating, application of spouts and handles, making of plaster molds, casting, firing, glazing and firing again... to the finished pot.

Concluding in each student pressing a small tile in the old fashioned way with plaster molds and mallets.
